CHANDIGARH: City residents seeking voter registrations have to now step out and move to the electoral registration booths, in order to get themselves registered. Earlier, after every five years, the Election Commission used to start a drive in which volunteers used to visit every house and register new voters, but this system has now been abolished.
D D Malhotra, the Naib Tehsildar of Electoral Commission Chandigarh, said: "As per the new system, the drives are meant only for corrections in the existing voter cards, and the residents must approach their nearest electoral registration booth in order to get themselves registered. We have set up 12 electoral registration booths according to the areas in different parts of the city so that people can easily go and get themselves registered." Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Sector 22, said: "The new system too works smoothly and people can make some effort to attain their voting rights."
Kriti Mahajan, a resident of Sector 21, said: "I am a working woman, and it is so difficult for me to go to the electoral registration booth to get myself registered."
Vikram Gaba, a resident of Sector 22, said: "It is a good decision. As a student, we should know how to perform all these duties on our own. I will definitely be going to the electoral office to make my voter ID card, and I will inform my friends as well about it."
Sarita Verma, a resident of Sector 19, said: "My office timings and the timings of the electoral office are same, so there is a clash in my timings with them. So, how can I go for my voter card there?"
